CHILD & YOUTH WELLBEING DEVELOPMENT

The mental health and wellbeing of children and youth in Jamaica is key to the development of the island’s future. It is well documented that poverty, dysfunctional family structures, and other social challenges have a direct impact later on in the adult lives of children.  With limited time, resources and knowledge there is little or no support for children and young people to cope with the day to day stresses and overall emotional well being. The Child & Youth Wellbeing Project aims to equip children in particular with the necessary skills to understand, cope and improve their emotional and physical wellbeing. Volunteers provide support to children and youth in schools and community settings.

Wellbeing Officer

Your role is to promote wellbeing

You can assist with a variety of tasks

  • Provide one-to-one support to youth with learning difficulties
  • Facilitate workshops and groups on wellbeing topic areas
  • Manage behaviour and conflict situations
  • Create boundaries and support youth to express emotions

This project aims to empower children and youth by strengthening positive emotions and feelings. While mental health can be a taboo subject in the Caribbean. The project will suit those who have a keen interest in psychology. You will be working alongside teachers integrating a timetable to address mental health in the classroom by organising workshops in the schools and crafting appropriate techniques in a way that the children and youth can relate, adapt and benefit

All volunteers will need to undertake an online training course.  The course consists of  a 10 hour training program to prepare you for your time in Jamaica. It will help you understand the local context and settings in addition to highlighting some of the common challenges faced by children and youth.
