HARD SKILLS
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or fresh out of university, there are a multitude of new skills you can learn (or existing skills you can develop further) by volunteering as a teacher overseas. If you’ve been contemplating going into teaching but you’re not quite ready to bite the bullet, volunteering as a teacher abroad can also be an excellent way to test the waters and see if this is the career for you.
SOFT SKILLS
In addition to all the hard skills you’ll learn, teaching can help to build a variety of skills like interpersonal skills, public speaking skills, and teamwork. And breaking up arguments on the playground is also excellent conflict resolution practise! All of these skills are transferable and are bound to impress employers, especially those who value employees with international work experience.
WORKING WITH CHILDREN
Any teacher or youth worker will tell you working with children is simultaneously the most frustrating, yet rewarding thing you can do. All of our volunteers are placed in well-run, stable primary schools so that you can work with the local teachers on a range of projects and really get to know the children on a one-to-one basis, rather than placing volunteers at the front of class.
A CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE
Schools in the Caribbean are unlikely to be the same as schools back home. In addition to the different teaching styles and curriculums, the students come from a different culture and will likely have different socioeconomic circumstances than the children you work with in your home country. Volunteering as a teacher overseas can be an excellent insight into the frameworks that Caribbean teachers use to combat a variety of issues, some of which you may find are applicable to your own day-to-day work.
